Finding the Perfect Job for You!

(Note: a look ahead to meetings in April are posted at the bottom of the message)

Abstract:

How do you find that perfect job, the one that will lead to a long and satisfying career? Forget about the discussions about all of the cool jobs for chemical engineers – “perfect” is really about the right fit between your interests, skills and personality and the requirements of the job.

Come meet Loraine Huchler, P.E., CMCÒ, President, MarTech Systems, Inc., – a licensed chemical engineer, management consultant, entrepreneur, and business owner – who worked for: the U.S. Navy, testing gas turbine engines for their carrier-based aircraft, General Dynamics, upgrading engines for the F-16 fighter aircraft, Betz Laboratories, marketing chemical products for water treatment in refineries, electrical power plants and paper mills and, for the last 17 years, has served as the President and Founder of an engineering consulting firm.

Join us for this thought-provoking exploration of how to match “Who you are” with the “Perfect job.”

About the Speaker:

Loraine Huchler, P.E., CMCÒ  President, MarTech Systems, Inc. – an engineering consulting firm

Loraine Huchler is the founder and president of MarTech Systems, Inc., a firm that assesses and manages risk in water-related utility systems in industrial and commercial facilities.  Other services include conceptual process design, conducting water conservation and water reuse projects, training operations personnel and serving as an expert witness in patent infringement and equipment failure litigation.

She previously worked in the Technical Marketing Group of BetzDearborn Water Management (now GE Infrastructure, Water and Process Technologies) to support industrial water chemical treatment products.  Prior to entering the water treatment industry, she worked in the defense industry designing F-16 fighter jet aircraft and testing aviation gas turbine engine lubricants for conformance to military specifications.

Ms Huchler has presented and published numerous technical papers.  She currently publishes a quarterly column, “HPIn Water Management,” for an international trade journal, Hydrocarbon Processing and has published her first of a series of four books, Operating Practices for Industrial Water Management, Influent Water Systems, Gulf Publishing, Inc.. The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) honored Ms Huchler with the 2012 Entrepreneur Award and as a Distinguished New Engineer in 1994. She was also named as one of the “Best 50 Women in Business by New Jersey Biz in 2013 and a “Top 40 Business People Under 40” by Business News New Jersey in 2000.

Ms Huchler has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York.  She is licensed as a Professional Engineer in the states of New Jersey and Maryland and has qualified as a Certified Management Consultant.  She currently serves as Chair and CEO of the Institute of Management Consultants (IMC) USA and as the Counselor for the student SWE section at Rutgers University. Ms Huchler belongs to several technical societies including AIChE and NACE and has served three terms as the president of the New Jersey section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

SPECIAL NOTE:  Members of AIChE will also be available for a panel discussion of careers in chemical engineering

“Application of Artificial Neural Net Technology to Process Data ”

Dr. Weixian Shi

Abstract:
With modernization in pharmaceutical processing, data that was originally sparsely recorded on paper becomes more easily and frequently recorded in electronic format for the purpose of real time monitoring and control of process, especially with use of process analytical technology (PAT) tools. The availability of such huge amount of data opens up paramount of opportunity for extracting valuable process information which we were not able to do before with limited data recorded on paper.  Artificial Neural Net or ANN is one of the most powerful tools that can assist us in better use of the data.  In fact, ANN has a wide area of application where high volume of data exchange occurs, such as face identification; object recognition; pattern, gesture, speech, or text recognition; weather forecasting; and stock performance prediction.

Roller compaction is used in a variety of industries, such as foods, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, where dustless free flowing granules or shaped briquettes of materials are needed.  In order to understand the relative performance of ANN compared to the more traditional type of data analysis, we have derived empirical models with a set of Design of Experiment data from a roller compaction study using both ANN and the statistical method.  The result suggests that ANN has similar performance in term of ranking factors for importance and the quality of the data model.  The advantage of ANN over the statistical method is that it does not require data transformation or parameter adjustment before a meaningful model can be identified. This is especially valuable when the data is generated in free form experiments (i.e., combination of data from various DOEs with different factors) or the data pool may violate certain statistical rules, such as normality.
