About the Speakers:

Patrick Robinson, Ph. D.
In 2006, Dr. Patrick Robinson graduated summa cum laude from NJIT with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a minor in Applied Mathematics.  In 2010, he obtained a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at Lehigh University working for Professor William Luyben in the area of plant-wide process dynamics, modeling, and control.  He has worked summer co-op’s for Amerada Hess Port Reading Refinery, Phillips66 Bayway Refinery, and the DuPont Engineering HQ in Wilmington, DE through his academic career.

Dr. Robinson is currently in the Planning and Economics division of the Phillips 66 Bayway Refinery working as the Refinery LP and Models Engineer.  He has spent all 4 years of his career in the Phillips 66 Bayway refinery, first starting off as a Process Control Engineer for the Fluidized Catalytic Cracker (FCC), Alkylation, Butane Isomerization, Diesel Hydrotreaters, and Cat Naphtha Hydrotreater units.

Patrick has lived in the northeast his whole life.  He and his wife, Daniela, currently live in River Edge, NJ and have been married for two years.  He is a New York Giants fan, hikes on the weekends, enjoys volunteering, and owns a Vespa scooter.  Teaching and mentoring younger engineers is very important to Patrick, so he also acts as an industrial consultant for the Lehigh’s 2015 Chemical Engineering Senior Design class.

Cory Phillips, Ph. D.

Dr. Cory Phillips, a Detroit native, graduated from The University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) with a BSE in Chemical Engineering, received a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering focused on the design of heterogeneous catalysts for the production of renewable fuels and oxygenates. He returned to back to UM for post-doctoral work with his long time mentor and friend Professor Levi Thompson discovering new hydrogen generation catalysts for micro-channel reactor applications. After his post-doc, Cory worked as a research engineer with Honda R&D on the development of fuel-cell powered vehicles. Cory recalls working many long hours at Honda where a number of key discoveries were made in the area of advanced materials and catalysis. Later, his career path took him to the ConocoPhillips’ Detroit office where he worked in the area of surface tribology/tribo-chemistry and coordinated the commercialization of several automotive gear and transmission fluids. In this role, he also developed a technical interest in the area of process quality control modeling via multivariate characterization methods, big data visualization and also became a member of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE). He eventually joined the R&D organization of Phillips 66 for several years working as a senior engineer in the Advanced Hydrocarbon Fuels group designing new fuels and catalysts, also as an engineering supervisor for the pilot-scale process design/development team and later as the team lead for the FCC Research group. Currently, Dr. Phillips works for Phillips 66 serving as the Laboratory Team Lead at the Bayway Refinery in Linden, NJ certifying clean fuel and polypropylene products. He and his wife Erika, a Long Island, NY native, have been married for 17 years and have two children Taryn (14) and Cory Asher (11). They now live in Fanwood/Scotch Plains, NJ.
